is a native southerner living in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from B.E. Mays High School, and received her BS in Mathematics from the University of Georgia. Her M.Ed is from Pepperdine University, which she received before returning to UGA to for a Ph.D. in cultural studies, hip-hop, and education. dr. joyce worked as a southern hip-hop correspondent for over a decade, starting with Rap Pages, and contributing to XXL, SCRATCH, and the SOURCE - oftentimes introducing artists like T.I., DJ Toomp, YYT, and DJ Michael "5000" Watts. She contributes to FADER, wax poetics, and The AVE. Her most recent publication is “Tip Drills, Strip Clubs, and Representation in the Media," a chapter in the hip-hop feminism anthology, Home Girls Make Some Noise (Parker Publishing, 2007). The founder of Joyce Productions, a media services and content development agency, she consults with artists and organizations, including BME Recordings, Yung Joc, Block Entertainment, Grand Hustle producer Kevin "Khao" Cates, and the Andrew Young Foundation. She is an assistant professor of education at LaGrange College, located in LaGrange, Georgia, where she works with teachers on fusing hip-hop in the classroom.
